Spenix Football Fit Guide · 2026
A football jersey must fit the athlete and the equipment. Use this visual guide to measure players, compare youth and adult cuts, test shoulder-pad clearance and build a clean team roster before production.
Football Jersey Size Chart: The Planning Reference
The ranges below are a body-chest planning reference commonly used to organize a roster. They are not a universal finished-garment chart. Football cuts, shoulder construction and pad allowance vary by manufacturer, so the exact Spenix product chart or an approved sample must control the final order.
| Size family | Label | Body chest planning range | Before approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth | XS | 24–26 in | Confirm shoulder width and number scale |
| Youth | S | 26–28 in | Try on over intended pads |
| Youth | M | 28–30 in | Check sleeve opening and reach |
| Youth | L | 30–32 in | Confirm body length in stance |
| Youth | XL | 32–34 in | Compare with Adult S sample |
| Adult | S | 34–36 in | Confirm pad allowance |
| Adult | M | 38–40 in | Check mobility and torso length |
| Adult | L | 42–44 in | Check number proportions |
| Adult | XL | 46–48 in | Verify finished garment width |
| Adult | 2XL–3XL | 50–56 in | Confirm extended-size pattern and price |
How to Measure a Football Player Correctly
Use a flexible tape and record body plus equipment details. Do not guess from casual clothing.
Stand relaxed. Wrap the tape under the arms and around the fullest part of the chest. Keep it parallel to the floor.
Measure shoulder point to shoulder point, then record the shoulder-pad brand, model and size separately.
Measure from the high shoulder point to the desired hem. Recheck in a football stance so the jersey does not ride up.
Put on the pads and sample jersey. Raise both arms, reach forward, rotate and crouch. The collar and sleeves should stay controlled.
Youth vs Adult Football Jersey Fit
| Fit detail | Youth cut | Adult cut | What teams should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body proportion | Shorter torso and smaller frame | Longer torso and broader frame | Do not substitute by label alone |
| Shoulder area | Scaled for youth pads | Built for larger pad profiles | Test the actual equipment combination |
| Sleeve opening | Narrower and shorter | Wider with more reach room | Check movement, not just appearance |
| Numbers | Must remain legible on less space | More printable surface | Approve size-specific artwork placement |
| Growth room | Useful only in moderation | Fit is usually more stable | Avoid oversized collars and loose pads |

Team-Order Sizing Risk Chart
This chart is qualitative: longer bars mean a greater chance of remakes, late swaps or unhappy players.
Roster Size Sheet: What to Record
| Player | Body chest | Pad size/model | Jersey size | Pant size | Sample approved |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: #12 | Measure in inches | Record exactly | Youth or Adult + size | Record separately | Yes / No |
| Player 2 | — | — | — | — | — |
| Player 3 | — | — | — | — | — |
Use one master spreadsheet and one decision-maker. Lock names, numbers and sizes before artwork approval. If your team is still choosing materials, compare mesh, polyester and stretch football fabrics before the size sample is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I size up for shoulder pads?
Do not automatically move every athlete up one casual-clothing size. Use a football-specific chart and test the recommended size over the actual pads. The correct pattern already accounts for equipment; random sizing-up can create a loose collar, long body and unstable sleeves.
How tight should a football jersey be?
A game jersey should be controlled and close to the equipment without restricting breathing, reach or rotation. Seams should not be pulled open, and the hem should stay in position during movement.
Can youth and adult sizes be mixed in one team order?
Yes, but they should be recorded as separate size families. Approve how colors, numbers and panel proportions scale between the youth and adult patterns.
What if a player is between sizes?
Compare the player's pad profile, torso length and preferred fit, then try both sizes when possible. The size with full movement and cleaner equipment control is the better choice.
Does every brand use the same football jersey size chart?
No. Labels can match while finished dimensions differ. Use the chart for the exact product being ordered and keep that approved chart with the final roster.
