SPENIX FIELD GUIDE · FOOTBALL CARE
The short answer: Read the garment’s care label, remove loose dirt, treat stains gently and follow the stated wash and drying instructions. Do not assume all jersey fabrics or number applications tolerate the same treatment.
A muddy jersey can be cleaned. A number damaged by the wrong treatment may be harder to fix. The aim is not an aggressive “deep-clean hack.” It is a repeatable routine that deals with sweat and dirt while respecting the fabric, thread, patches and decoration on your particular uniform.

Start with the label—not with a laundry shortcut
The FTC’s apparel and labeling resource explains the role of care instructions. In practical terms, the sewn-in label is your starting point. If the jersey was decorated after manufacture, ask the decorator whether the finished item needs additional precautions.
| Stage | Simple action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| After play | Let damp kit air out until it can be washed | Leaving it sealed in a bag for days |
| Before washing | Remove loose dirt and check the label | Scrubbing a printed number with a stiff brush |
| Stain treatment | Use a compatible product and test a hidden area | Mixing cleaning chemicals or guessing a strong concentration |
| Washing | Follow label settings and separate suitable colours | Assuming hotter water is always better |
| Drying | Use the label-approved method; check remaining stains first | Applying high heat to an unknown decoration |
Deal with mud before loading the machine
Shake or brush away loose, dry dirt gently. Do not pull at stitching or scrape raised decoration. If a stain remains, identify whether it is mud, grass or another mark and use a treatment suitable for both the garment and the decoration. Test away from the visible number and follow the cleaner’s directions. A successful test on plain fabric does not prove the number will react the same way.
Protect the names and numbers
In its sports jersey washing guide, Nike recommends turning jerseys inside out, using a cold gentle wash and avoiding fabric softener and dryer heat. Treat that as general guidance, not permission to ignore your own label. Separately applied names and numbers deserve particular attention.
- Turn the jersey inside out when the care instructions allow it.
- Keep it away from exposed zips, hooks and rough items.
- Do not iron directly over a name, number or badge unless the finished-garment instructions specifically permit it.
- If an edge is already lifting, contact the decorator before repeated washing makes it worse.
Wash the whole garment—not just the stain
Check the inside, underarms, cuffs and neckline. Use the recommended detergent amount for the load rather than adding extra in the hope of a better result. Inspect the jersey after washing. If a mark remains, avoid setting it with heat before deciding what to do next. Dry fully before folding and storage.
Want to understand what your jersey is made from? Our mesh, polyester and stretch-fabric guide separates fibre content from fabric structure. The sublimation and embroidery guide also helps explain why two decorated jerseys may not feel or wash the same way.
A simple team laundry routine
- 01 →CheckRead the label and inspect stains and decoration.
- 02 →CleanUse compatible treatment and the stated wash settings.
- 03 ✓Dry and recordDry completely, inspect and return to the right player.
Make the routine easy for families
Send one short care card with the uniforms. Include a clear picture of the actual label and a contact for damaged decoration. Avoid a long list of internet remedies. For team-managed laundry, keep a numbered check-in list so that missing kit does not become a last-minute game-day problem.
- Record player name, jersey number and size.
- Mark which items are checked in and returned.
- Keep damaged items separate for inspection.
- Store clean, dry uniforms away from damp bags and equipment.
Plan a rotation without guessing replacement rates
Suppose 24 players each have two practice jerseys. That is 48 jerseys in rotation. Add four team spares and the order becomes 52. The calculator below counts garments and your entered budget; it does not predict how often jerseys will wear out. Wear depends on construction, use, care and damage.

Formula: players × sets per player + extra sets. Budget = total sets × entered set price + other costs. Taxes, freight, duties and fees must be included in your own inputs. If your browser disables the tool, use these formulas directly.

Quick answers
Can I put a football jersey in the dryer?
Follow the label. When the finished garment’s instructions are unclear, ask the supplier before exposing the fabric and decoration to heat. Air drying is often recommended, but the garment’s instructions decide.
Will sublimation peel like a surface transfer?
Dye sublimation and applied transfers use different processes. That does not make the whole garment immune to heat damage, snagging or unsuitable cleaners.
How do we handle an older jersey with no readable label?
Ask the manufacturer or decorator using photographs and the order reference. Do not assume that a similar-looking jersey has the same care requirements.
Build a kit your team will want to wear.
Send Spenix your roster size, design idea and required arrival date. Ask for a written breakdown of materials, decoration, sizes, shipping and any extra costs before you approve production.
